30 Jul 5 Questions with an Insurance Partner
We are working on an exciting opportunity for an experienced insurance lawyer to join a well-respected boutique firm in Wellington. We talked to the Managing Partner for this role to find out more about a day in the life of an insurance lawyer at this fantastic firm.
1. What does a typical workday look like for you and your team?
A typical day is likely to include any or all of the following: opinion work in respect of a contentious insurance claim; client contact in terms of progressing civil litigation matters – usually Estate, Construction or Business Dispute matters; on the phone negotiating with counsel for other parties in terms of seeking resolution of a particular point; drafting pleadings for a civil litigation matter; attending a Court case management conference; preparing for or attending an ADR forum; and engaging in some shared humour and banter with our colleagues in the firm. We also provide regulatory advice to insurers, and carry out policy wording reviews together with reviewing marketing material for insurers to check for legislative compliance. If matters aren’t resolved then we also appear as counsel, usually in the High Court.
2. What is your favourite thing about your firm?
The people we have on board, and our shared commitment to quality.
3. What is the best thing about your team?
Our camaraderie – we all get on, and look out for and support each other to do the best work for our clients.
4. What are some things your firm does to look after its staff members?
Every week we have an initiative to support us all in practicing well. This includes chair massages on site; cheese scones; basically anything which lets us take a moment in the busyness of the working day.
5. What is the outlook like for insurance lawyers in this post-COVID environment?
The demand for legal services by the insurance industry had not been adversely affected by COVID. As well as contentious claims matters, the ramifications of the Financial Services Legislation Amendment Act changes affecting the provision of Financial Advice by and for insurers is generating work for our team and we see further work on the horizon coming out of the Insurance legislation review.
We are looking for a lawyer with at least seven years of post-admission experience, in-depth insurance knowledge, and high levels of motivation. Our client is offering a highly competitive base salary and excellent benefits, including contributions to a health insurance group scheme, preferred banking rates, and flexible work options. As well as having access to comprehensive professional development, the successful candidate will also have the opportunity to represent the firm at international insurance conferences.
